Menopause Allergies

Menopause is the period in a woman’s life when the ovulation and menstrual cycle stops. Menopause allergies are commonly experienced by many women. The average age for menopause for most women is 50 years. The reason why menopause allergies are experienced is that the immune system of women going through menopause tends to become weak following hormonal changes and this makes them more susceptible to the allergies.

Allergens are basically substances that are quite often inhaled or eaten and these can result in allergic reactions when these are recognized by the body’s immune system. Since different women tend to be sensitive towards different things there is no comprehensive list of menopause allergies that may be experienced by women.

Progesterone is mainly responsible for menopause allergies. These allergic reactions tend to cause a certain level of discomfort and different women exhibit different symptoms of these allergies. The severity of the allergic reaction is also dependent on the kind of allergen. Progesterone both the synthetic form and the kind produced within the body can cause allergic reactions in a person. The symptoms of this allergic reaction include rashes or hives and other life threatening reactions including anaphylactic shocks. In some cases the progesterone produced in the body can result in severe allergic reactions and this can be difficult to treat.

Menopause allergies can also be seen in the form of acne, seborrheic dermatitis and psoriasis. Relief can be obtained from these problems with the use of topical medications. Some reactions of this kind respond to ketoconazole medications while others respond to sulfa based medications. Some women respond well to cortisone creams administered in short courses but these cortisone treatments should be utilized for a short period of time.

Those women who experience changes in health during the menstrual cycle are seen to have high IgE antibodies against estrogen and progesterone as against those women who are going through menopause. Research indicates that progesterone causes histamine release from either basophiles or increases susceptibility of mast cells to some mast cell degranulators. Some other menopause allergies can also result in problems like a runny nose.

Medical practitioners are actively working on menopause allergies and are trying to find ways of discovering healthy and effective solutions to this problem of these allergies.
