Menopause Memory Loss

During the time of menopause, number of problems arises in a woman’s life. Some symptoms of menopause like weight gain; hot flashes, mood swings, itching, and anxiety contribute to massive amount of tension. Women who experience these kinds of problems, they feel extremely stressed and it can lead to some difficulties in retaining and retrieving information which can be called as menopause memory loss.

Lack of adequate sleep as well as proper nutrition can make it extremely hard for the brain to work properly. It can be said that fluctuating levels of estrogen is the reason for fuzzy brains during menopause. Estrogen plays a very important and active role in memory by stimulating neurotransmitters, which allow parts of the brain to communicate with one another. Estrogen also helps in dilating blood vessels in the brain so that the flow of red blood cells can be increased and thus helps the brain to function smoothly. During the time of menopause, the level of estrogen decreases and therefore the problem of menopause memory loss arise. One way to solve the problem of menopause memory loss can be termed as estrogen replacement therapy (ERT).

Menopause memory loss is an expected element of aging. But menopausal women often complain of "brain freeze" or “memory loss” or the inability to retrieve certain information at that point of time when they need it. Slight memory loss is a normal symptom of menopause.

There are a few solutions to prevent the menopause memory loss and to keep the memory sharp and the brain in place. The remedies include:-

  • Keep the Brain Active:
  • As our body needs exercise, our brain also needs some sorts of work outs. In order to keep the brain active and sharp, it is advisable to do crossword puzzles, brainteasers, or evening or weekend classes. Travel is an excellent way which can increase the power of the brain.
  • Rest: Menopause and insomnia often go simultaneously. During menopause, women might not have adequate sleep due to anxiety, but it is very important to have proper sleep. Eight hours of adequate sleep helps to increase the energy levels so that the brain can work properly and clearly and remember informations whenever required.
  • Proper diet:
  • Though proper diet may not seem like a very important thing, but without the proper nutrients the brain can't work efficiently. In order to get rid of the problems of memory loss during menopause, one should eat lots of fresh fruit and vegetables, blueberries, fish, legumes, soy products and foods containing balanced proportion of both protein and carbohydrates. Alcohol should be strictly avoided.
  • Reduce Stress:
  • Due to extreme stress, a hormone named “Cortisole” is released from the body which blocks memories from being stored. Stress affects those women more who go through early menopause or surgical menopause. Yoga, Tai Chi, walking, swimming, jogging or playing sports are all excellent ways to increase energy, keep the mind cool, strengthen the body and improve blood circulation which can reduce the problem of menopause memory loss to a large extent.
