Menopause Spotting

Menopause is the natural process in a woman’s life and is marked by cessation of the menstrual cycle. A woman who hasn’t had a menstrual period for more than one year is considered to be going through menopause. Menopause spotting or bleeding can seem alarming for many women. However a number of reasons can be attributed to such menopause spotting or bleeding.

Women experience menopause between the ages of 45 and 55. The cessation of the menstrual cycle is not sudden and in fact occurs over a period of time. Many women tend to experience erratic menstrual cycles with larger or smaller gap between periods. So many women may miss their periods for a few months and this may be followed with spotting or bleeding. Any menopause spotting of bleeding should be reported to the doctor.

Menopause spotting or bleeding can also be because of hormone replacement therapy involving estrogen hormone. If a woman is postmenopausal and is required to take synthetic estrogen including Premarin then it can result in menopause spotting. Normally the doctor will recommend some tests to be completed in order to get a better picture of the reason behind the said spotting.

Some other reasons for spotting may include the existence of fibroids. A woman suffering from endometriosis may also experience such a spotting. Progesterone deficiency can result in hormonal imbalances and this in turn can result in menopause spotting or bleeding. Menopause period is marked by erratic menstrual cycles and this also results in some menopause symptoms such as vaginal dryness.

Intercourse because of vaginal dryness can become quite painful and in this case bleeding or spotting after intercourse may be observed. If the spotting is accompanied by in pain the lower abdominal region then it could be because of fibroids or benign tumors present in the uterine wall. If the spotting is accompanied with low degree pain and fever along with vaginal discharge then it could be a sign of a pelvic infection.

A woman is stated to be experiencing actual menopause where she has gone without periods for an entire year. It is advisable to keep count of the number of months when there is no bleeding. Once a woman enters post menopause period and is confirmed to have gone through menopause by the doctor any menopause spotting should be brought to the notice of the doctor.

This kind of spotting particularly in the post menopause period can be investigated by the gynecologist by dilating the cervix and scraping the uterine lining. Often a hysteroscopy may be conducted to check inside the uterus along with some other options like endometrial biopsy and an ultrasound as well. It is important to reduce stress and eat a balanced diet including vegetables and fruits to reduce the symptoms associated with menopause.
