Menopause Treatment

Menopause is a natural process in a woman’s life that results in cessation of the menstrual cycle. This process however brings about a large number of physiological and psychological changes in a woman and these changes can be difficult to handle. Menopause treatment refers to the treatment undertaken to relieve the symptoms of menopause and to reduce any chronic conditions that accompany the process of aging.

Hormone therapy is primarily used in menopause treatment and is an effective option for alleviating some menopause symptoms like hot flashes among other things. Based on the medical history the doctor may prescribe estrogen in low dosage to provide relief. Some low dose antidepressants are also known to reduce hot flashes and these may also be prescribed.

Bone loss is commonly observed following the onset of menopause and some non hormonal medications can help in preventing and even treating osteoporosis. These medicines help in reducing the possibility or risk of fractures. These medications include biophosphonates and they help in reducing bone loss and are mainly used in treatment of osteoporosis among women. Vaginal dryness is experienced during menopause and vaginal estrogen is often prescribed as a part of menopause treatment.

This vaginal estrogen is in the form of a tablet, cream or ring and is absorbed in the tissue within the vagina. This helps in reducing vaginal dryness along with any associated discomfort during intercourse. Menopause treatment also includes taking steps to prevent the discomfort and symptoms associate with menopause. Regular and moderate exercise can help in reducing depression. Exercise also gives protection against osteoporosis, cardiovascular diseases and diabetes along with other conditions. Reducing consumption of spicy food, hot beverages and alcohol can help in reducing problems such as hot flashes. Dressing in layers is crucial to reduce the discomfort associated with hot flashes.

Relaxation techniques along with muscle relaxation can help in reducing the discomfort associated with menopause. Urinary incontinence is often experienced during menopause and muscle exercises like kegel exercises for the pelvic area can help reduce the problem of urinary incontinence. Eating a healthy and balanced diet is crucial as it can help you to handle the changes associated with menopause well. Calcium and Vitamin D should also be taken and is a part of the menopause treatment. Smoking should be avoided as it increases risk of heart problems, cancer, stroke and osteoporosis.

Regular medical checkup should also be conducted during the menopause period. Some alternative menopause treatments include taking phytoestrogens which are naturally found in some types of food items. Soy contains isoflavones and these help in alleviating some menopause symptoms such as hot flashes. Vitamin E can also provide relief from problems like hot flashes. Black cohosh is a popular alternative menopause treatment and can help in reducing hot flashes. Dong quai, chasteberry, evening primrose oil are some of the other options for menopause treatment.
