Perimenopause Symptoms
Perimenopause can be described as the transitional period before the time the menstruation actually stops and this period is marked by some changes in the actual menstrual cycle of the woman. Perimenopause is also marked by some specific physical along with some emotional symptoms. These are called perimenopause symptoms. Perimenopause can last for even 10 years and it is marked by some changes in the woman’s body. Perimenopause symptoms are caused when the eggs released by the ovaries becomes less regular. Likewise less production of estrogen and other hormones by the ovaries can also be observed. The fertility is reduced and often shortening of menstrual cycles occurs. Cycle irregularity increases and ovulations lessen. Reduction in the circulating levels of progesterone and estrogen can also be observed. Reduction in androgen and testosterone is also observed. Primarily perimenopause results from declining functioning of ovaries. Some common perimenopause symptoms include mood changes, headaches, problems in concentrating, changes in the sexual desire, dryness in the vagina, sleep disturbances and night sweats. The vaginal dryness results from reduction in estrogen levels and intercourse in such situations may become painful. Mood changes may include increased irritability and depression. Hot flashes, increased sweating and frequent urination are also common in this condition. It is important to note that the perimenopuse symptoms are often similar to those experienced during premenstrual syndrome. Hot flashes are among the most common perimenopause symtoms and as many as 60 percent women experience them. Hot flashes occur because of fluctuations in the estrogen levels. Because of these changes the hypothalamus reacts and heat surges can be felt through the body. These heat surges can be primarily felt in the neck and back areas. Perimenopause symptoms also include heavy sweating which is often followed with cold shivering. This happens as the body attempts to swing the body temperature back after experiencing hot flashes. Research indicates that African American women are more likely to experience hot flashes as against white women. Marked changes in menstrual cycle are noticed in women experiencing perimenopause symptoms. The cycles may become shorter or longer and many women also miss their period. The bleeding may also be light or heavy. Women also tend to feel anxious and weepy as mood swings are often observed. This is because the changes in hormones may interfere with the mood regulator in the body called serotonin. With reduced estrogen levels women also lose bone at a faster pace and it cannot be easily replaced. This can lead to increased possibility of osteoporosis. This reduced estrogen also may lead to changes in the blood cholesterol with increase in the bad cholesterol and this may increase the risk of women developing heart diseases.
As estrogen production drops changes are seen in the urethra and bladder and the tissues weaken and this can lead to leakage of urine in some situations. Shrinkage of tissue in the vaginal region can also be observed. For a proper diagnosis it is important to seek medical attention as the perimenopause symptoms may at times resemble other medical conditions.
